Candice Patton did not arrive in Los Angeles with a safety net. In 2004, she won a talent contest to appear on the soap The Young and the Restless while studying at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. It was a dazzling start that quickly faded into the realities of the industry.
For nearly ten years, she took on one-off roles in shows such as Castle, Entourage, and Heroes. Visibility was scarce, but she kept learning. During that time, she collected rejections and small paychecks that barely covered rent in a city that doesn't forgive a lack of work.
There was no Plan B.
In 2014, her luck changed direction. The CW was looking for a face to play Iris West in the series The Flash, and Patton auditioned for the role. She landed the part after several chemistry tests with Grant Gustin and moved to Vancouver to shoot the pilot.
The series became a pillar of American broadcast television. But the road was not easy for Patton. The actress had to deal with a wave of social media harassment for playing a character who was white in the original comics (a controversy she herself spoke out about years later).
She remained in the main cast for the nine seasons the show ran. In 2017, she won the Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress and began having more say in creative decisions about her character. She was earning over 100,000 dollars per episode in the final stages of the project.
Filming wrapped for good in 2023.
But her interest in the industry had already shifted toward other areas. After almost a decade in front of the cameras, she decided she needed to control where stories came from. So she founded her own production company to develop independent projects that broke away from the traditional hero formula.
In 2022, Patton began building CandiGirl Productions. The goal was clear: she wanted to produce content where Black women were more than the lead's love interest. In 2023, she focused on finding scripts that explored genres far from special effects and latex suits.
Leaving network television gave her the freedom to explore genre film. In 2024, she took part in low-budget projects that recaptured the feeling of intimate shoots. After 184 episodes of the same series, her body was asking for a different way of working.
Her commitment to independence is total.
In 2025, her schedule shifted away from fan conventions to focus on pre-production for her first feature film as executive producer. The estimated budget for this debut project does not exceed five million dollars.
