Chyler Leigh started her career with high school parodies and soft drink commercials. In 2001 she starred in Not Another Teen Movie, playing Janey Briggs. That role required mocking teen movie clichés, but she brought a dignity to it that wasn't in the original script.
That was just the beginning.
Hollywood tends to typecast raunchy comedy newcomers quickly. But Leigh dodged that bullet fast. In 2002 she appeared in the series Girls Club, and shortly after she showed up in The Practice. These supporting roles paid the bills while she looked for a spot on prestige television.
She was self-taught and honed her craft on low-budget shoots in Florida. There she learned that the camera picks up any trace of doubt. So she decided her next step had to be a serious drama where physical appearance was not the center of the plot.
In 2007, she joined the cast of Grey's Anatomy to play Lexie Grey. It wasn't an easy character to introduce. She had to be the protagonist's long-lost sister on a show that was already a massive hit. Audiences were quick to accept her thanks to the mix of fragility and photographic memory that defined the character.
For five years she was the emotional heart of the halls at Seattle Grace. Her departure from the series in 2012 was not a creative decision by the studio but a personal request from the actress to spend more time with her family. Her character's death in a plane crash remains one of the most talked-about moments among medical drama fans.
And the gamble paid off.
After leaving the medical drama, she took time to choose projects that wouldn't tie her down to decade-long contracts. In 2014, she starred in Taxi Brooklyn. It was an action production filmed in New York that lasted only one season. That commercial failure didn't slow her work pace, because her name already guaranteed a minimum audience.
In 2015, she accepted the role of Alex Danvers in the series Supergirl. It was a necessary change of pace. Playing a scientist and special agent allowed her to explore a physical side she hadn't tapped into before. The show ran for six seasons and ended its broadcast in 2021, with a total of 126 episodes filmed.
Her work in the superhero genre gave her financial stability that allowed her to be more selective. But she also used that platform to speak openly about her mental health. In 2019 she made public her diagnosis of bipolar disorder to help eliminate the stigma in the entertainment industry.
Family drama returned to her career in 2023 with the series The Way Home. In this project she plays Kat Landry in a story that mixes time travel with generational conflict between mother and daughter. The tone is much more restrained than her earlier work on The CW.
She isn't chasing red carpet fame.
In 2024, production on the third season of The Way Home confirmed the start of filming on location in Ontario. The contract stipulates shooting schedules that respect the actress's rest periods at her home in Nashville. Each episode of this series is estimated to have a budget close to two million dollars per episode.
