Dorian Harewood never needed to raise his voice for viewers to know he was in control of the scene. His training at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music gave him an almost military discipline, which he later brought to the Broadway stages of the seventies. There he learned that silence communicates more than a poorly executed monologue.
He debuted in musical theater, but it was television that put his face in front of millions of people.
In 1977, he played Simon Haley in the miniseries Roots: The Next Generations. That role gave him a level of visibility that few Black actors had in the American industry at the time. But Harewood did not want to be just a face on a social-issue poster. He was looking for characters with real edges and contradictions.
So he began selecting scripts in which his imposing presence was not his only tool of the trade. The actor knew that physical beauty in Hollywood has a very cruel expiration date.
Stanley Kubrick cast him in Full Metal Jacket in 1987. The shoot in London was grueling, with the director repeating takes until the actors were physically exhausted. Harewood played recruit Eightball and endured Kubrick's relentless perfectionism without complaining once.
Nearly a year of filming for a movie that changed the way he understood commercial cinema.
Before that, he had already taken on the weight of playing a national legend. In 1984 he stepped into the shoes of athlete Jesse Owens for a TV movie that earned him the respect of the most demanding critics. The physical preparation was so intense that he finished the project in better athletic condition than many professional athletes.
And the gamble paid off.
By the late eighties, his name was already on the list of premium supporting actors who could rescue a mediocre production. He worked on Against All Odds in 1984 and on The Falcon and the Snowman the following year. In both cases he brought a restraint that contrasted with the theatrical style of some of his co-stars.
Many viewers recognize his face, but millions of kids who grew up in the nineties grew up with his voice. Harewood understood early on that voice acting and animation were profitable niches that offered a longevity his physical image sometimes doesn't. He gave voice to characters in Biker Mice from Mars and in several adaptations of Spider-Man.
And the paycheck always arrived on time.
In 2021 he appeared in the series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier as Paul. It was a brief role that linked the activism of the past with the present of the Marvel Universe. He wasn't chasing the spotlight, since by then he had nothing left to prove to casting directors at the major networks.
He has lived in Los Angeles for decades and maintains one of the most stable careers in the actors' union. His name appears in the credits of more than two hundred titles across film, television and video games. The last time he renewed his image contract was for a public health campaign in the United States.
