The Voice That Devoured a Man

Dan Castellaneta looks nothing like his most famous creation. He's a thin, vegetarian and extremely private man who, in 1987, took a supporting job on a sketch show called The Tracey Ullman Show. There he was asked to voice a poorly drawn yellow cartoon that appeared on screen for only a few seconds.

The first version of Homer Simpson was a mediocre imitation of Walter Matthau. Castellaneta quickly realized that the voice was wrecking his throat and couldn't keep up with the recording schedule.

And that's how the grunt was born.

He lowered his pitch, added a lazy, guttural drawl and turned a functional family man into a walking disaster. But before becoming a global star, he honed his craft with the improv troupe The Second City in Chicago during the 1980s. That school taught him to build characters out of chaos and quick comebacks.

The 300,000-Dollar Business

Many people believe his career begins and ends in the town of Springfield. In 1991 he won his first Emmy, and he would win the award again in 1992, 1993 and 2004 for his ability to play dozens of different townspeople.

He voiced Grampa Simpson, Barney Gumble and Krusty the Clown because the show's initial budget didn't allow for hiring more people.

Money was never the main motivator.

Castellaneta earns about 300,000 dollars per episode since the contract renewal of 2008. That is a staggering figure for someone who can go to the supermarket without anyone asking for an autograph, because his face remains a mystery to the general public.

He doesn't just read what others write. Together with his wife, Deb Lacusta, he has written scripts for the series since 2000. His sense of comic timing lets him know exactly where to place a pause or an absurd scream.

The Resilience of an Invisible Actor

He appeared in The Flash in 2023, playing a bus driver. It was a brief nod for fans who recognize his real face after decades of visual anonymity.

The industry is fickle.

In 2024, he appeared in season three of The Bear, playing a customer in a scene that nodded to his Chicago roots. His on-screen appearances tend to be brief but effective, because he prefers the security of the recording studio to the makeup chair of long shoots.

Because voice work allows a longevity that physical appearance often punishes.

In 2023, he returned to his role as Robot Devil in the revival of Futurama. He still follows a strict routine that includes avoiding alcohol and tobacco to protect his vocal cords. The syndication deal for the main series ensures his residual income tops five million dollars a year, without ever having to step on a set.
