Emily Bett Rickards needed just a pair of glasses and a handful of lines of technical dialogue to upend the CW network's plans in 2012.
At the time, the Canadian actress arrived on the set of Arrow with a contract for a single day of filming. But her chemistry with the lead was so obvious that the writers scrapped their previous plans. The Felicity Smoak character went from being a minor office plot device to the emotional core of a production that ran for eight seasons.
It was a calculated accident.
Before this breakthrough, Rickards trained at the Vancouver Film School and completed her education at the Althea Centre in Los Angeles. That technical foundation allowed her to handle the rhythm of sitcom comedy within a dark action drama. Audiences demanded her permanent presence, and the production company had to rewrite the contracts of the entire main cast to make room for her.
After seven years tied to production schedules in Vancouver, she decided she'd had enough of green screens. In 2019, she announced she would not renew her contract for the series' final season. Many analysts didn't understand why an actress at the peak of her popularity would walk away from a secure paycheck for the uncertainty of theater in New York.
And so she did.
In 2019, she headed the cast of the play Reborning in Off-Broadway theater. She played an artist obsessed with creating hyperrealistic dolls. Critics praised her ability to carry psychological drama far from the fireworks of television. Rickards craved the risk of live theater and the physical contact with audiences that closed studio work denied her.
Because real success isn't measured only by audiences of millions.
Her film career has been a selection of small projects where the budget doesn't dictate the script. In 2022, she starred in the comedy We Need to Talk. But she didn't limit herself to traditional acting. In 2024, she got involved in developing new projects in Canada focused on auteur stories and independent narratives.
Toward the end of 2023, she briefly returned for the final episode of The Flash as a nod to DC Universe fans. Filming took place under a strict confidentiality agreement to prevent leaks before the premiere. Her final cable TV contract paid more than $40,000 for each week of work.
