Ruby Rose didn't need to say much for Hollywood to take notice. In 2015, she appeared in the third season of Orange Is the New Black, and social media's algorithms went into overdrive over her look. Her image broke with the mold of the conventional television actress. Even before that moment, she was already a media figure in Australia, but the jump to the United States was aggressive and decisive.
The industry saw her as a gold mine for action movies.
In 2017, she landed three big-budget productions that showcased her physical abilities and her defiant gaze. She appeared in John Wick: Chapter 2, xXx: Reactivated and Pitch Perfect 3. Major studios wanted her for characters of few words and strong screen presence. But that action heroine label soon became a creative limitation that was hard to manage.
Signing on to play Kate Kane in the series Batwoman in 2019 was a key moment for on-screen representation. She was the first openly lesbian actress to star in a superhero series with a multimillion-dollar budget. Pressure from fans was immense from the very first announcement. In 2020, Rose announced she was leaving the production after filming only the first season.
That departure was neither a quiet nor a friendly decision. Years later, Rose spoke out about dangerous working conditions and the serious spinal injuries she suffered on the set. Her relationship with Warner Bros. and The CW network ended up in the court of public opinion. Her career therefore took a different path, away from big episodic television franchises.
Physical risk outweighed professional ambition.
During that transitional period, she turned to projects where she had more control over her own safety. In 2020, she starred in The Doorman, and in 2021 she worked alongside Morgan Freeman in Vanquish. Critics were harsh on these B-movies. But Rose kept up a steady production pace in direct-to-streaming genre films.
In 2022, she shot Stowaway, and in 2024 she took part in Dirty Angels under director Martin Campbell. These choices reflect an interest in more contained, technical shoots. She no longer chases the applause of prestigious festivals or the red carpets of major awards. Her niche is in the suspense and action market, which has a loyal audience that watches from the comfort of home.
And her bet on independence seems to be paying off.
In 2025, the series Sherlock & Daughter is set to premiere, with her playing the main antagonist. Filming for this production took place mostly in locations in Ireland. The film Dirty Angels had an estimated budget of $35 million for its post-production phase.
