Melissa Benoist wasn't looking for capes or superpowers when she left Colorado to study musical theater in New York. Her first real big break came in 2012 with the series Glee. There she played Marley Rose for two and a half seasons before the musical drama lost its spark.
The pace of TV shoots was her real education.
In 2014, she appeared in Whiplash. That Damien Chazelle film won three Academy Awards and put Benoist on the radar of Los Angeles casting directors. Her role was brief but helped humanize the lead before the story plunged into the rhythmic chaos of the conservatory.
The process of landing the lead role in Supergirl in 2015 was a grueling audition marathon that lasted three months. The actress had to go through multiple screen tests until she convinced executives at CBS. She signed a contract tying her to the character for six full seasons and more than one hundred episodes, shot mostly in Vancouver.
And although critics praised her ability to distinguish Kara Danvers from her alter ego, the physical toll was constant. Filming the series meant fourteen-hour days and daily strength training. But television wasn't her only refuge during that period of intense media exposure.
In 2018, she made her Broadway debut in the lead role of Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.
After the end of her run as a superhero in 2021, the actress decided to take control of her own projects. She founded the production company Three Things Productions and signed an exclusive deal with Warner Bros. TV to develop original content. Her goal was to stop depending on other people's decisions about her career.
The industry no longer saw her as just a friendly face for promotional posters.
In 2024, she starred in the series The Girls on the Bus for the streaming service Max. In this project, she played a political reporter inspired by the writings of Amy Chozick. The show explored the inner workings of U.S. election campaigns from a technical and professional perspective.
That same year, she appeared in the film The Thicket alongside actor Peter Dinklage. It's a dark thriller set in early 20th-century Texas. The film required shooting in extreme weather conditions in Calgary with subzero temperatures that complicated the production's technical logistics.
The change of pace was total.
Benoist also explored publishing with her first young adult novel, Haven’s Secret, released in 2021. The book launched a literary series co-written with her sister and aimed at teen readers. Translation rights were sold to several European countries a few months after its U.S. release.
In 2024, the series The Girls on the Bus was canceled after its first season due to budget cuts at Max. The production had an estimated budget of several million dollars per episode and did not reach the viewership numbers needed for a renewal.
