Emily Kinney arrived in New York with a theater degree under her arm and the determination of someone with no backup plan. She was 2006. She worked at coffee shops in Brooklyn while auditioning for every Broadway role she could find in the newspapers.
Her first real break came with the play Spring Awakening in 2008. That production allowed her to explore the connection between music and the stage. But mainstream recognition would take another three years to arrive.
In 2011 she joined the cast of The Walking Dead to play Beth Greene. Nobody expected that a quiet teenager would become the emotional center of the series for several seasons. Her character brought a much-needed fragility to a world of extreme violence.
Music was never a plan B.
During breaks from filming in Atlanta, she was writing the songs that would form her first serious material. In 2014, her character died in an episode that drew nearly fifteen million viewers in the United States. That forced exit from the series allowed her to focus on her career as a singer-songwriter.
She released the album This Is War in 2015. The record featured a folk-pop style far removed from the manufactured image of a TV star. Its lyrics dealt with breakups and the strange loneliness of hotel rooms.
Her youthful look allowed her to play characters much younger than herself for much of her career. In 2015 she appeared in Masters of Sex and shortly after played a villain in The Flash and Arrow. She sought different kinds of roles to avoid being typecast as the innocent girl.
In 2016 she starred in Conviction alongside Hayley Atwell. The series did not meet audience expectations and was canceled after thirteen episodes. That setback brought her back to independent film and small-venue concerts.
And the gamble paid off.
Kinney prefers creative control over constant exposure in big productions. In 2018, she released the album Oh Jonathan and toured small venues across the country in a van. She is an artist who manages her own production schedule.
In 2021 she released her fourth studio album, The Supporting Character. The record explores her identity as a supporting actress and her acceptance of her place in an industry obsessed with instant success. Critics praised her honesty about envy and the passage of time.
She isn't chasing stadiums.
During 2022, she appeared in the action movie The Enforcer alongside Antonio Banderas. Filming took place in Greece and marked her return to international-budget projects after several years immersed in acoustic music. She also starred in the Christmas movie Santa Bootcamp that same year.
In 2023 she released the album Swim on an independent label. The record features ten songs built mainly on organic instrumentation and lyrics about personal resilience.
In 2024, Emily Kinney has built a community of 140,000 monthly listeners on the main streaming platforms.
