Messiah is a Netflix series created by Michael Petroni, starring Mehdi Dehbi, Tomer Sisley and Michelle Monaghan. A man appears in the Middle East for the first time and gathers a growing number of people who believe he is the Messiah. His followers claim he is the eschatological return of ʿĪsā, that is, Jesus in Arabic. His apparent miracles attract followers from around the world, and the international reaction grows unchecked. His true identity raises doubts. A CIA agent is assigned to investigate his case, while this man's figure becomes a global phenomenon the modern world doesn't know how to interpret.

Trivia about Messiah

Beau Bridges and Philip Baker Hall joined the cast in recurring roles, and this was Hall's last credit before his death in 2022.

Netflix ordered the series in November 2017 with ten episodes and canceled it on March 26, 2020, after a single season.

The international casting required filling around 240 speaking roles and running casting calls in several countries, according to creator Michael Petroni.

Production filmed at numerous locations in Jordan and New Mexico, including the deserts of Albuquerque and Jordan, which Petroni described as one of the show's main logistical challenges.

The Royal Film Commission of Jordan asked Netflix not to air the series in the country, arguing that its content could violate the sanctity of religion.

The cancellation sparked controversy because the series had used locations in Amman and had an international cast, factors cited as obstacles to continuing production.

The Royal Film Commission of Jordan voiced its opposition ahead of the premiere, citing the handling of religious content it considered provocative and controversial.
