Roma Downey was born in 1960 in Derry, Northern Ireland. She grew up amid armed conflict and the political tensions of a divided region. But her ambition was never on the barricades; it was on the stages of London and New York.
After training at the Drama Studio London, she crossed the Atlantic to try her luck in theater. In 1991, she played Jackie Kennedy in the miniseries A Woman Named Jackie. That role gave her the visibility she needed to catch the attention of CBS casting directors, who were looking for someone with an unusual mix of authority and warmth.
Then television came along.
In 1994, she accepted the role of Monica in the series Touched by an Angel. The project seemed risky because religious themes rarely worked in prime time. But the show stayed on the air for nine seasons and went on to air more than 200 episodes. Downey negotiated her contracts firmly and ended up earning more than $100,000 per episode in the final seasons.
Downey wasn't content to be a friendly face in front of the camera. In 2009, she co-founded LightWorkers Media with her husband, producer Mark Burnett. She recognized before anyone else that there was a massive audience looking for spiritual and family-friendly content. So she stopped waiting for agents' calls and began developing her own projects.
In 2013, they produced the miniseries The Bible for History Channel. The premiere drew 13 million viewers in the United States alone. Critics were not especially kind about its technical quality, but the ratings were undeniable. The success led to the series being re-edited as a feature film titled Son of God in 2014.
The money was in the production.
Through her company, she managed multimillion-dollar budgets and closed global distribution deals. In 2016, she took part in producing the new version of Ben-Hur, a film that cost about 100 million dollars. The movie was a resounding box office failure and recovered only a fraction of the initial investment. It was a hard blow to her reputation as an infallible producer in commercial cinema.
Far from retiring after the setback of Ben-Hur, Downey focused on the digital sector. She sold her production company to MGM and became president of the studio's faith and family division. From that post, she oversaw the launch of specialized streaming platforms. Her strategy relied on micro-marketing aimed at specific religious communities.
In 2021, she produced the film Resurrection for the Discovery+ platform. Filming took place in Morocco, reusing sets from earlier productions to cut costs. Downey oversees every detail of the final cut and often personally supervises social media promotional campaigns.
The industry changed, and so did she.
In 2024, she premiered the series The Baxters on Prime Video, based on the novels by Karen Kingsbury. The production consists of 34 episodes shot back to back to optimize the actors' schedules. Roma Downey is credited as executive producer and also plays the family matriarch, Elizabeth Baxter. The distribution deal with Amazon ensures the series reaches more than 200 countries simultaneously.
