The invasion we always feared. An enemy we never expected.

The story begins on Cybertron, in the middle of the war between the Autobots and the Decepticons. An Autobot ship called the Ark escapes the planet carrying a secret cargo that both sides covet. Decepticon missiles hit it, and the Ark is presumed lost. Years later, on Earth, NASA detects strange activity on the dark side of the Moon. President John F. Kennedy authorizes a mission to send a man to the Moon, under the pretext of investigating what happened there. Directed by Michael Bay, the film follows Sam Witwicky, played by Shia LaBeouf, and Optimus Prime, who must lead the Autobots against Megatron and the Decepticons, who also want to get their hands on that technology.

Trivia about Transformers: Dark of the Moon

Bay made a public bet of 25,000 dollars that the twins Skids and Mudflap would not appear in the film. Even so, the two made a brief appearance at NEST headquarters, in their alternate modes.

Preparations for the shoot began in northwestern Indiana, around Gary, a city that stands in for Ukraine in the film.

About 70% of the live-action action shots were filmed in 3D using Arri Alexa and Sony F35 cameras, but more than half had to be converted to 3D in post-production to fix technical problems.

The film contains recycled footage from The Island (2005), another film directed by Michael Bay, as was discovered after shooting.

Corey Burton, who had already voiced Shockwave in the original series and in Transformers: Animated, turned down the role. The character ended up in the hands of Frank Welker.

The most complex scene, in which the Driller destroys a computer-generated skyscraper, took 288 hours to render each frame.

"Transformers: Dark of the Moon" destroyed 532 vehicles, all damaged by flooding and donated free of charge by an insurance company for the shoot, according to Michael Bay.

Patrick Dempsey landed the role of Dylan after running into Michael Bay by chance at a Ferrari presentation in Los Angeles; the director then offered him a place in the cast.
