Francesco Quinn didn't ask for permission to enter the movie business. In 1986, Oliver Stone gave him the role of Rhah in Platoon, and that debut at age 23 became his biggest impact on the worldwide box office. It was a direct entry into the heart of Hollywood, in an industry that always watched him closely as the son of Anthony Quinn.
The shoot in the Philippines was a hell of mud and mosquitoes. But Francesco held his own alongside Willem Dafoe and Charlie Sheen. Stone reportedly sought authenticity, and the young Quinn brought a mystical quality that contrasted with the script's violence.
That role gave him worldwide recognition.
Despite the impact of the film, the industry did not hand him a fast track to full stardom. Being the heir to a legend of the Golden Age meant constant comparisons, which Francesco handled by throwing himself into steady work. He never tried to imitate his father's walk, but the physical resemblance was something casting directors could not ignore.
Working with his father was a conscious decision. In 1990 they shared the screen in the television adaptation of The Old Man and the Sea. Francesco played the young version of Anthony's character in a generational mirror exercise that critics received coldly.
His career never followed the straight path of major stars. He preferred independent productions and television series with character roles. He appeared in JAG and had a stint on the soap opera The Young and the Restless between 1999 and 2001.
Hard work and craftsmanship never scared him.
In 2003 he joined the cast of 24, playing Syed Ali. His command of several languages (he spoke Spanish and Italian fluently) allowed him to access international projects that other actors of his generation missed because of the language barrier. Yet the general public still associated him with the Vietnam jungle.
His vocal talent opened the doors of big-budget film in a different area. In 2011 he voiced the character Dino in Transformers: Dark of the Moon. It was his last major production before fate cut the cord for good.
The family name was both an inheritance and a wall.
On August 5, 2011, Francesco Quinn went for a run near his home in Malibu. He was accompanied by his son Max. He suffered a sudden, fatal heart attack while exercising, and emergency services were unable to revive him. He was 48 years old.
His death certificate closed a career of more than 30 on-screen credits. The autopsy confirmed that the cause of death was heart failure related to a pre-existing condition.
