Synopsis of Star Trek

The USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) travels the galaxy in the late 23rd century. Its captain, James T. Kirk, played by William Shatner, commands a crew that features first officer and science officer Spock, played by Leonard Nimoy, and chief medical officer Leonard McCoy, played by DeForest Kelley. Their mission is to explore unknown worlds, observe new life forms and make contact with civilizations no one has visited. Each expedition forces them to make quick decisions and face unexpected dangers. The conflict arises from their very different approaches: Spock puts logic ahead of emotion, while his crewmates are guided by instinct and a sense of responsibility. The series, created by Gene Roddenberry, airs on NBC.

Trivia about Star Trek

The artist Wah Chang, who had worked for Walt Disney Productions, was hired to design and build props. Among them is the sliding communicator, which is often credited with influencing the design of the portable cell phone.
NBC rejected the first pilot as too cerebral. Its executives believed part of that flaw came from the script they themselves had chosen.
Between December 1967 and March 1968, NBC received nearly 116,000 letters in favor of the series. Roddenberry secretly funded the fan campaign that drove them.
In an unusual move, NBC announced the show's renewal on television following the episode "The Omega Glory," which aired on March 1, 1968. The announcement prompted letters of thanks in similar numbers.
CBS declined to buy the series because it already had a similar show in development, Lost in Space, created by Irwin Allen and premiered in 1965.
The Smithsonian Institution requested a copy of the series for its archives. It was the only series to receive that honor.
After the renewal, NBC moved the series to Friday nights and cut its budget considerably; Gene Roddenberry left day-to-day production, and Fred Freiberger took over in the third season.
