In the year 2285, Admiral James T. Kirk, played by William Shatner, observes a simulation exercise with Captain Spock's recruits. The exercise takes place in San Francisco, where Starfleet trains its future officers. Lieutenant Saavik takes command of the USS Enterprise on a rescue mission. Her goal is to save the crew of the Kobayashi Maru, a damaged ship in need of help. Kirk watches from a distance as the young officer makes her first decisions at the helm, while the others follow the exercise closely.

Ah, Kirk, my old friend. Do you know the Klingon proverb that tells us revenge is a dish that is best served cold? It is very cold in space.
[last words] Now. Now, you can't get away. From Hell's heart, I stab at thee. For hate's sake, I spit my last breath at thee.
