Synopsis of Mission: Impossible

Mission: Impossible is an American television series that was created and initially produced by Bruce Geller. It chronicles the missions of a team of secret government agents known as the Impossible Missions Force. In the first season, the team is led by Dan Briggs, played by Steven Hill; Jim Phelps, played by Peter Graves, takes charge for the remaining seasons. A hallmark of the series shows Briggs or Phelps receiving his instructions on a recording that then self-destructs, followed by the theme music composed by Lalo Schifrin. The series aired on the CBS network from September 1966 to March 1973, then returned to television for two seasons on ABC, from 1988 to 1990, retaining only Graves in the cast. It later inspired a popular series of theatrical motion pictures starring Tom Cruise, beginning in 1996.

Trivia about Mission: Impossible

The main theme, composed by Lalo Schifrin, is written in 54. The composer justified that time signature with a joke about two-legged dancers and five-legged aliens.
An electronic dance version of the theme, written by Larry Mullen Jr. and Adam Clayton, bandmates of U2, was released in 1996 to coincide with the premiere of the first movie.
The production team called "Gellerese" an invented language so that people who didn't speak Slavic languages could read it, also intended as comic relief.
One of the most frequently cited locations was the Bradbury Building, which appears in other movies and series, from The Outer Limits to Blade Runner.
For much of the series, the hand that lit the fuse in the opening title belonged to creator Bruce Geller himself, until around the sixth season.
In its early seasons, the series won ten Primetime Emmy Awards, including two for Outstanding Drama Series, and three Golden Globes.
Steven Hill left the role of Dan Briggs after the first season because his religious convictions kept him from working some evenings and Saturdays; Peter Graves replaced him starting in the second season.
Paramount canceled the series after seven seasons because it considered it more profitable to distribute older episodes than to produce new ones, amid a dispute between its executives and those of CBS.
