Synopsis of The Avengers

The Avengers is a British spy TV series created by Sydney Newman and broadcast on ITV. Its first episode, "Hot Snow," premiered on January 7, 1961 in the United Kingdom. The story centers on Dr. David Keel, played by Ian Hendry, who works alongside John Steed, the companion whose name gives the series its title. Both become caught up in espionage affairs that force them to move carefully and solve dangerous problems. Patrick Macnee plays Steed, a character the series places at the center of the action from the very beginning. The conflict arises from the risks surrounding these two men and the need to stay one step ahead of those who threaten the country.

Trivia about The Avengers

Sydney Newman, who would later push for the creation of Doctor Who for the BBC, never appeared on screen as the creator of The Avengers. He explained that during his time at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, such credits were not given.
The show's cars became almost as famous as its actors, and Emma Peel drove a Lotus Elan convertible in her episodes.
When Diana Rigg joined the series in 1965, Laurie Johnson composed a new theme based on a track previously released on an LP called The Shake.
In 2011, for the series' 50 anniversary, Howard Blake's nearly complete scores were released on a double CD, including the Johnson themes.
Between 1971 and 1973, Springbok Radio, the English-language station of South Africa's SABC, broadcast a radio series based on the TV series.
Diana Rigg demanded a pay raise during the show's first season after finding out that the cameraman was earning more than she was. The producers agreed to avoid her leaving, helped by the series' popularity in the United States.
The episode "A Touch of Brimstone" drew objections from American censors over its depiction of the Hellfire Club and Emma Peel's outfit, as well as a scene in which she is attacked with a whip.
ABC canceled the series in 1969 after a sharp ratings drop when it was scheduled against "Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In," although it continued to perform well in the United Kingdom and Europe.
