Synopsis of The Six Million Dollar Man

Steve Austin is an astronaut and test pilot for the U.S. Air Force. During an experimental flight, his aircraft crashes, and the accident leaves him with injuries so severe that doctors barely give him any hope. The government agency O.S.I., which is working on a secret project called Bionics, decides to use him as a test subject. It replaces Austin's arm, both legs, and one of his eyes with cybernetic parts that cost six million dollars, which is where the series gets its title. The new implants give him enormous strength, unusual speed, and telescopic and infrared vision. Created by Kenneth Johnson and starring Lee Majors, the series airs on ABC. The pilot episode explores how Austin reacts to his new body and to an agency that rebuilt him without asking his permission.

Trivia about The Six Million Dollar Man

The slow-motion effect used in the action scenes was inspired by the one used by NFL Films, the production company of the American football league.
The producers first considered Monte Markham to play Steve Austin in the 1973 movie that served as the pilot.
Producer Kenneth Johnson set very specific limits on Steve Austin's abilities so the series wouldn't get out of hand.
The zoom effect of Austin's bionic eye, at 20.2:1, was taken from fake computer graphics that appear in the opening titles.
The highest speed shown on the series' speedometer is 67 mph (108 km/h), in the episode "The Pal-Mir Escort."
The song in the pilot telefilms was written by Glen A. Larson and performed by Dusty Springfield, although it was later replaced by an instrumental theme.
The series led to the spin-off "The Bionic Woman," which premiered in 1976; during the 1975-1976 season, both shows made the Nielsen Top Ten, and "The Bionic Woman" ranked higher.
The first TV movie was nominated for a Hugo Award before "The Six Million Dollar Man" became a regular series.
