Synopsis of Bonanza

Bonanza follows the Cartwright family, led by Ben, a patriarch who has been widowed three times. Each of his sons was born from a different marriage: Adam, the eldest, is an architect with urban manners who built the main house of the ranch; Hoss is a gentle, affable giant; and Little Joe, the youngest, is impulsive and fiery. The four live at the Ponderosa, a vast estate on the east shore of Lake Tahoe in Nevada, near Virginia City, in the 1860s. Each week, the series tells their adventures, with situations that force the Cartwrights to make difficult decisions. Created by David Dortort and aired on NBC, the series stars Lorne Greene as Ben.

Trivia about Bonanza

Between 1961 and 1972, the series aired on Sundays at nine p.m. across the United States, a time slot that contributed to its ratings success.
After moving to Sundays in its third season, the series reached the number one spot in the ratings in 1964 and held it until 1967.
Bonanza was the first one-hour television series filmed in color.
The series' theme song is also called Bonanza and became a hit single.
The House of the Ponderosa was recreated in Incline Village, Nevada, in 1967 and operated as a tourist attraction until it was sold in September 2004.
In 1964, Lorne Greene rewrote the lyrics of the Livingston and Evans song with a more familiar tone.
During development, David Dortort clashed with NBC executives who wanted well-known actors for the lead roles, but he insisted on casting less famous performers so they could develop their characters.
The death of Dan Blocker in May 1972 coincided with a change in time slot and a sharp drop in ratings, factors that contributed to the series being canceled during its fourteenth season.
