Julian Glover stands almost six foot three and has a voice that sounds carved from oak. That physical presence allowed him to do something no other actor could say out loud without sounding like a liar. In just nine years, the Londoner faced off against Luke Skywalker, James Bond and Indiana Jones.
It's not a matter of luck. Glover belongs to that generation of British performers who see film as a natural extension of classical theater.
In 1980 he took direction from Irvin Kershner to play General Veers in The Empire Strikes Back. That Imperial officer, who led the attack on the rebel base on Hoth, was no mere supporting player. Glover brought a cold military precision that immediately convinced George Lucas.
And the phone didn't stop ringing.
Just one year after destroying shield generators in a galaxy far, far away, Glover swapped the Imperial uniform for the suit of a Greek tycoon. In 1981 he played Aristotle Kristatos in For Your Eyes Only. His performance broke the mold of the over-the-top villains in the Bond series.
Kristatos was an elegant and calculating man. But what truly elevated the role was Glover's ability to shift from ally to enemy without moving a single facial muscle.
The actor has always argued that villains don't see themselves as bad guys. To him, they are simply men with very clear goals.
This philosophy reached its peak in 1989 with Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Steven Spielberg cast him as Walter Donovan, the antiques collector who sells his soul to the Nazis for immortality. Glover filmed his own death scene, aging decades in seconds through practical effects and makeup that took hours to apply.
Because theater was always her safety net.
Younger audiences don't know him for his 1980s villainy. In 2011 Glover accepted the role of Grand Maester Pycelle in the series Game of Thrones. For six seasons he played a man who feigned extreme frailty to survive in a court of wolves.
It was a deliberate choice by the actor. Glover proposed that Pycelle be an actor within the story itself, someone who hunched his back only when witnesses were present.
That performance returned him to the forefront of global pop culture. But his foundation has always been the Royal Shakespeare Company, where he honed his craft in the 1960s, sharing the stage with figures such as Judi Dench.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2022 he appeared in the film Tár alongside Cate Blanchett, playing Andris Davis. The production was shot mainly in Berlin and Dresden with a budget of $35 million.
Glover is still active well past his eighties. By 2024, his filmography had surpassed 200 official credits across film and television.
