Judy Cornwell was born in London in 1940, but her childhood unfolded far from the bustle of the British capital. Her parents decided to move to Australia, and there she began working in radio and professional theater before turning twenty. When she returned to England, she brought with her a technical experience that many actors her age envied.
She worked as a dancer and comedian in variety shows.
Her first major film role came in 1967 with Two for the Road. In that film she shared the screen with Audrey Hepburn and Albert Finney, directed by Stanley Donen. It was a direct entry into the top tier of the British film industry. In 1970, she appeared in Wuthering Heights and shortly after in The Terror of London, showing that her range was not limited to light comedy.
And the gamble paid off.
In the late 1980s, her face was familiar, but she still lacked the project that would make her a fixture in millions of homes. In 1990, she accepted the role of Daisy in the sitcom Keeping Up Appearances. She played Hyacinth Bucket's sister and lived in a chaotic house surrounded by dogs and a husband who barely left the sofa.
The series ran for five seasons and was exported to dozens of countries. Judy Cornwell filmed 44 episodes between 1990 and 1995. Audiences connected with her character because she embodied warmth in contrast to the social rigidity of her on-screen sister. But Daisy was not her only hit on television during that decade.
She played Anya in Santa Claus: The Movie in 1985.
In 1987, she appeared in Doctor Who in the serial Paradise Towers. British critics praised her ability to bring humanity to supporting characters who might have gone unnoticed in other hands. Her radio training gave her perfect diction and a sense of rhythm that she applied to every script that crossed her path.
Cornwell never stopped working on stage. In 2003, she joined the Royal Shakespeare Company for an adaptation of Alice in Wonderland. Her classical training allowed her to move from commercial television to the national stage without losing credibility along the way.
She published her autobiography, Adventures of a Jelly Baby, in 2005. In the book, she details the ups and downs of a profession that often forgets actresses once they reach a certain age. But she overcame that rough patch with iron discipline and more than five decades of uninterrupted activity in the entertainment industry.
In 2014, she appeared in an episode of the medical drama Casualty, playing Bel Jakes. A year later, she took part in the movie The Legend of Barney Thomson, directed by Robert Carlyle.
Her last credited television appearance was in 2020.
She lives in Brighton and has kept her seaside home for decades. In 2015, she shot her scenes for Robert Carlyle's film on location in Glasgow.
