Barbara Bain never wanted to be the center of attention because of her face. Before arriving in Hollywood, she studied sociology and danced under Martha Graham in New York. That training in modern dance gave her an elegant rigidity that she would later exploit in every shot. In 1957, she made her television debut with small roles, but her gaze already projected something different from the other actresses of her generation.
In 1966, she accepted the role of Cinnamon Carter in Mission: Impossible. She was not just a sidekick on the espionage missions. She won three consecutive Primetime Emmy Awards between 1967 and 1969 for that work. She was the first woman to achieve that number of consecutive trophies in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series category.
But the money broke the contract. In 1969, she left the series after a tense salary negotiation with her husband, Martin Landau. The studio, Paramount, refused to match their demands, and both left the project at the peak of its popularity.
And the gamble didn't turn out the way they expected.
After several years of low-profile projects, she returned to the front lines with science fiction. In 1975, she moved to London to shoot Space: 1999. She played Dr. Helena Russell on a lunar base that drifted uncontrollably through the universe. Critics were merciless about her acting style, finding it far too cold.
Because her character was meant to convey the calm needed in a situation of constant catastrophe. The series ended in 1977 after two very expensive seasons that failed to win over American advertisers. Even so, Russell's character remains etched in the memories of genre fans.
Commercial cinema stopped being her absolute priority after the 1970s.
In 1993, she divorced Landau and focused on teaching at the Actors Studio West. Her screen appearances since then have been very sporadic. In 1998, she appeared in the film Animals with the Tollkeeper, and in 2009, she voiced characters in the animated series Ben 10: Alien Force.
In 2020, she starred in On the Rocks under the direction of Sofia Coppola. She played Gran, the mother of Rashida Jones's character, in a comedy-drama set in New York. The production had a budget of $15 million and was distributed through a digital streaming platform.
In 2016, she received her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The ceremony took place on April 28 in front of number 6767 on Hollywood Boulevard.
