Anthony Zerbe has one of those faces directors use to convey a character without writing a single line of dialogue. He doesn't need to shout or make grand gestures to unsettle the audience. In 1971 he played Matthias in The Omega Man and made a villain in a robe and white contact lenses believable.
His training at the Stella Adler Studio in New York gave him the tools to prioritize psychology over artifice. There he learned that technique is secondary if there is no real intention behind every gesture. And it works because Zerbe understands the power of silence.
Before moving into film, he spent years on Broadway stages and in regional theaters. That discipline shows in his diction. But his widespread recognition came through television.
In 1976, he won the Emmy Award for his work on the series Harry O. His portrayal of a cynical, weary police lieutenant became a masterclass in how to be a top-tier supporting actor without overshadowing the lead.
In the late eighties, the Bond franchise was looking for a darker, more violent tone. In 1989, Zerbe joined the cast of Licence to Kill to play Milton Krest. His death in a decompression chamber is one of the most memorable moments of the Timothy Dalton era.
Still, Zerbe always preferred roles where the threat was intellectual. His voice has a cadence that suggests he knows something the rest of the characters don't.
He is a stage actor.
In 2003, the Wachowski siblings cast him in The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions. He played Councillor Hamann, a man who questioned the nature of the machines in a world ruled by them. His scene with Keanu Reeves in Zion's engineering level is the philosophical heart of the sequel.
In 2013, he took part in American Hustle under David O. Russell's direction. He played a senator in a production with a budget of $40 million.
But his career never stopped at the major studios.
For decades he has toured the United States with It is All Done with Mirrors. It is a one-man show based on the work of poet e.e. cummings, which he produces and directs himself. It is a piece that demands a physical stamina many actors of his generation gave up on long ago.
In 2022, he shot his scenes for the feature film The First Bird. Filming took place at various locations in Oregon under the technical supervision of Jeremy Power Regimbal.
The production used high-resolution cameras to capture the nuances of his performance in a harsh natural setting.
