Josh Duhamel

The jaw that conquered Ashton Kutcher

Josh Duhamel never dreamed of becoming an actor while studying biology at the University of Minot. His initial plan was dentistry, but his grades didn't cooperate, and football took up too much space in his head. In 1997, he decided to try his luck at a modeling competition in New York.

He won the title of Male Model of the Year. In the final, he beat an unknown Ashton Kutcher, and that trophy was his one-way ticket to Los Angeles. He soon landed a role on the soap opera All My Children, where he played Leo du Pres from 1999.

And the gamble paid off.

In 2002, he won an Emmy for that role. It validated his presence in the industry beyond his looks. But his real breakout into prime time came with Las Vegas in 2003. For five seasons, he brought Danny McCoy to life in the shadow of a veteran like James Caan.

The Uniform as a Comfort Zone

Michael Bay was looking for faces that wouldn't overshadow the giant robots in 2007. Duhamel fit the profile of Captain William Lennox for the first installment of Transformers. The actor reprised the role four times through 2017. The franchise grossed more than $4,800 million worldwide.

He took on the leading-man role in Life as We Know It in 2010. He shared the screen with Katherine Heigl and specialized in love stories with predictable endings. During that stage he shot Safe Haven in 2013, based on a Nicholas Sparks novel.

But being typecast was starting to take its toll.

He sought out grittier projects to move away from his image as the perfect boy next door. In 2018, he starred in the series Unsolved, playing detective Greg Kading as he investigated the murders of Tupac and Biggie Smalls. It was a hard-edged change of pace that critics received more favorably than his earlier comedies.

The Director's Chair and Indie Film

Duhamel decided he wanted to control his own stories. In 2019, he wrote, directed, and starred in Buddy Games. It's a raunchy comedy inspired by his own trips with childhood friends. The film got a sequel in 2023 titled Buddy Games: Spring Awakening.

He landed one of his most solid roles in 2022 with Bandit. Based on a true story, he played a bank robber on the run from the law in Canada. He shot the film in just 21 days, under a frenetic production schedule that demanded tremendous technical precision.

His pay on low-budget productions is a mystery.

In 2023, he joined the cast of the miniseries The Thing About Pam alongside Renée Zellweger. Duhamel played defense attorney Joel Schwartz in a real-crime storyline. Filming took place mainly on locations in New Orleans under strict safety protocols.

Production of Shotgun Wedding in 2022 cost Amazon Studios 50 million dollars.
