At eighteen, Jensen Ackles stuffed a handful of T-shirts into a suitcase and drove straight to Los Angeles. He had a spot reserved to study Sports Medicine at Texas Tech University, but at the last second he decided to withdraw. His father, a voice actor and stage performer in Dallas, warned him that the industry chewed up good-looking newcomers before their first morning coffee.
In 1997, he signed a three-year contract with the soap opera Days of Our Lives. He worked at a frantic pace of forty pages a day, earned three consecutive Daytime Emmy Award nominations and learned to memorize entire scenes during the drive to the studio.
No one learns the craft faster than a daily soap actor.
Later came supporting roles in teen-oriented series such as Dark Angel and the fourth season of Smallville. But in that last one, he almost ended up wearing Clark Kent's red cape. The producers chose Tom Welling in the final casting round, and he was given a supporting role that was written out at the end of the season. Ackles cashed the check and went looking for another audition.
In 2005, Eric Kripke invited him to audition for a modest series on The WB. The premise looked like cannon fodder for an early cancellation: two brothers driving down backroad motels in a black car to hunt urban legends. Ackles initially read lines for Sam Winchester, the brainy brother. At the end of the audition, he asked to read for Dean, the older one, because he had more fun firing shotguns and trading wisecracks with his mouth full of junk food.
Supernatural survived the turn of the century, the 2007 writers' strike and three television network mergers. Ackles shot 327 episodes spread across fifteen uninterrupted seasons, an enormous workload that wrapped up in 2020 with a loyal fan base around the world.
On the Vancouver sets, he learned camera operation and directed six episodes of the series. He insisted on working with fixed lenses. Because he knew the pulse of the crew better than the guest directors, he cut downtime during shooting in half.
Fifteen years stuck in the same car would wear anyone down.
The biggest risk of playing the same type of character for a decade and a half is becoming invisible to casting directors. When Supernatural turned off the lights on the production trucks in 2020, Eric Kripke called him back to offer him a spot in the third season of The Boys in 2022. There was no prior audition, but there were seven months of strict physical training to fit into the Soldier Boy suit, a brutal, cowardly, traumatized parody of World War II heroes.
Ackles built the character with a mix of military cynicism and the gravelly voice of a hardcore smoker. His sung version of Rapture on a fictional 1980s TV show topped twenty million views online within its first 48 hours. And in 2024, Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television greenlit the spin-off Vought Rising, a project focused on the character's origins in the 1950s.
In 2020, he and his wife Danneel founded the company Chaos Machine Productions under a first-look development deal with Warner Bros. Television. The first attempt to capitalize on the brand that made him famous was The Winchesters in 2022, a prequel on which he served as executive producer and narrator. But The CW canceled the show in 2023 after only thirteen episodes aired, due to the network's sale and advertising cutbacks on broadcast television.
Traditional television no longer forgave mid-budget productions.
So he diversified his investments away from the California spotlight. In Dripping Springs, he launched The Family Business Beer Company brewery on a rustic 15-acre property. His brother-in-law Gino Graul handles local distribution, while he oversees the books between contracts.
In 2024, he signed on as the lead of the action thriller Countdown for Prime Video, written by Derek Haas. The production plan set filming to begin in Los Angeles with a direct order for thirteen episodes and a temporary exclusivity clause that put his other dramatic series projects on hold.
