Synopsis of Monk

Adrian Monk was a brilliant homicide detective with the San Francisco Police Department until the murder of his wife, Trudy, worsens his obsessive-compulsive disorder and phobias. Unable to leave home for three years, he lives shut in and depends on Sharona Fleming, his nurse, who helps him with daily life. Together, they begin working as private detectives and police consultants. Monk, with his quirks and his gift for noticing details, solves cases that seem impossible through unconventional methods. Meanwhile, Trudy's murder remains unsolved, and he keeps investigating it, hoping to reclaim his life. Starring Tony Shalhoub and airing on USA Network, the series is set in San Francisco.

Trivia about Monk

ABC conceived the series as a police drama with a character who has OCD, in the style of Inspector Clouseau. Originally, they wanted Michael Richards for the role, but he turned it down.
The series spent two years in a difficult development process due to the challenges of finding an actor for the lead role.
The pilot episode was filmed in Vancouver, British Columbia, in 2001, and the rest of the first season was shot in the Toronto area.
The show itself turned the change of theme music into a joke, in an episode where fans protest because the music of a detective show has been changed.
Randy Newman won the Emmy for Outstanding Main Title Theme Music in 2004 for the song that replaced the original opening theme in season two.
The final episode holds the record for the most-watched cable television drama script between 2009 and 2012, with 9.4 million viewers.
In 2012, a TV movie of "Monk" was scrapped, although USA Network had commissioned Andy Breckman to develop two possible follow-ups: an international adventure and another about Monk's run for mayor.
Almost fifteen years after the series ended, Peacock premiered «Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie» on December 8, 2023. Written by Breckman, it brings back Tony Shalhoub and most of the original cast.
