Glenne Headly wasn't chasing Hollywood stardom when she joined the Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago in 1979. That company was a hotbed of raw talent, where she shared the stage with names like John Malkovich or Gary Sinise. Before shooting her first film, she was already a respected stage presence on the American theater circuit.
She won four Joseph Jefferson Awards before turning thirty.
Her training was classical and rigorous. But her gift for light comedy caught the eye of casting directors looking for fresh faces in the mid-1980s. In 1985 she appeared in Eleni, and a year later in Se acabó el pastel, where she began refining the restrained style that would define her career.
And the industry took notice of her sharp, intelligent gaze.
In 1988, her luck changed when Frank Oz cast her in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. She had the difficult task of not being overshadowed by two comedy giants like Steve Martin and Michael Caine. She played Janet Colgate with a mix of feigned innocence and technical precision that won over critics of the time.
That film grossed more than $45 million at the domestic box office in the United States.
Warren Beatty cast her as Tess Trueheart in Dick Tracy during 1990. The role called for a classic presence in a world of saturated colors and latex prosthetics. Headly preferred human nuance over comic-book caricature and made her character the emotional anchor of the film.
But she never felt comfortable with the movie star label. She preferred projects where the script mattered more than the marketing budget.
In 1991, she worked alongside Demi Moore in the thriller Mortal Thoughts. She played a woman trapped in a violent marriage to the character played by Bruce Willis. It was one of her darkest performances, far removed from the polished comedy that had made her famous years earlier.
During 1995, she starred in Mr. Holland's Opus, her biggest commercial hit in drama, playing Richard Dreyfuss's wife. The script leaned toward easy sentimentality, but she brought the restraint the story needed to work on screen.
Television offered her long-running characters from the late nineties onward. By 1989 she had already earned an Emmy nomination for the miniseries Lonesome Dove. Years later she joined the cast of ER in 1996, playing Dr. Abby Keaton across several key episodes.
Her last major performance came in 2016 in the HBO series The Night Of. She played attorney Alison Crowe with a professional coolness reminiscent of her best years on the Chicago stage.
In 2017, she was filming the series Future Man for Hulu. Production came to a sudden halt on June 8 due to her death from complications of a pulmonary embolism.
She was 62 years old. The production company chose to keep all of her recorded scenes and rewrite the plot of the remaining episodes to explain her character's disappearance.
