From Rugs to Operating Rooms

Howie Mandel was selling rugs in Toronto when he took the stage at a comedy club on a dare. He had no plan and no formal training in acting. But on that night in 1978, his paycheck changed forever, because a Hollywood producer in the crowd was looking for fresh faces for a variety show.

In 1982, he landed the role of Dr. Wayne Fiscus on the series St. Elsewhere. It was an anomaly in his career. Mandel was a comic known for exaggerated gestures and broad jokes, suddenly caught up in a prestigious medical drama. The series ran for six seasons and gave him the financial security he needed to experiment with his true passion, broadcast television.

No one expected a medical drama to become his breakout platform.

While working in fiction, Mandel lent his voice to one of the most famous creatures in 1980s cinema. In 1984, he recorded the sounds and dialogue of Gizmo for the movie Gremlins. Director Joe Dante wanted a voice that didn't sound human but still conveyed absolute vulnerability. Mandel was paid a standard voice-acting fee, not knowing that this character would become a global merchandising phenomenon.

The Briefcase Dictatorship

After St. Elsewhere ended in 1988, the comedian turned to animation. In 1990 he created and starred in Bobby's World, drawing on his ability to modulate children's voices. The show stayed on the air for eight years and generated broadcasting rights revenue that exceeded every expectation at Fox. It was his first major hit as a creator and executive producer.

His real breakout came with a format he initially looked down on. In 2005, he agreed to host Deal or No Deal. Mandel didn't want to be a talking head on a briefcase game show. But NBC insisted, and the show drew 16 million viewers in its first broadcasts.

Audiences simply connected with his anxiety.

It was on this set that his obsessive-compulsive disorder became obvious to the whole world. Mandel suffers from mysophobia (an extreme fear of germs) and refused to shake hands with contestants. Instead of the traditional greeting, he introduced the fist bump. What started as a personal protective measure became a trademark that the production exploited to give the host a warmer image.

The Business of Opinion

In 2010, he joined America's Got Talent as a judge, replacing David Hasselhoff. What seemed like a temporary gig became his longest-running job. Mandel understood that modern television didn't need complex characters, but direct opinions and facial reactions that could be turned into quick social media content.

And the gamble paid off.

Off camera, Mandel runs a production company called Alevy Productions, which develops reality and game show formats. In 2022, he produced and hosted Bullsh*t the Game Show for Netflix, aiming to recreate the tension of gambling games through the mechanics of deception. The project didn't reach the numbers of his earlier work, but it helped him test the streaming market.

Television has no patience for boredom.

In 2024, Mandel marked his fifteenth consecutive season as a judge on America's Got Talent: Fantasy League. His current contract with the production company Fremantle includes specific clauses on control of his image and the scheduling of his recording sessions, so they fit around his Las Vegas casino comedy tours. His estimated net worth that same year surpassed $60 million after he sold the syndication rights to his 1990s shows.
