In 1972, a group of unknowns took the stage at the Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto to perform Godspell. Andrea Martin shared a dressing room with Gilda Radner and Martin Short in a production that ended up reshaping North American comedy. But she wasn't chasing quick fame. She preferred the grassroots work of theater and rehearsal rooms, where the script was written on the fly.
That collective energy led to SCTV.
Between 1976 and 1984, Martin built characters through disguise and physical transformation. Her Edith Prickley, with the leopard print and the nervous laugh, was not just a visual gag. It was the technical construction of an actress who wrote her own material. In fact, she won two Emmy Awards as a writer before the industry began to see her as a supporting player of luxury on the big screen.
The discipline of Canadian television gave her a rigor that Hollywood took a while to understand. Because Andrea Martin was never a traditional method actress. Her school was quick reaction and absolute control of her vocal cords.
Many actors settle down once they hit their sixties, but she decided it was time to learn circus acrobatics. In 2013, she accepted the role of Berthe in the Broadway revival of Pippin. She was 66 years old. Every night she sang a full musical number while performing tricks on a trapeze several meters above the stage, with no safety net.
She won the second Tony of her career while hanging from an iron bar.
That physical ability has defined her stage career since 1993, when she won her first major award for My Favorite Year. For Martin, the body is a precision tool. So when the movies called her to play Aunt Voula in My Big Fat Greek Wedding in 2002, she applied the same logic of controlled exaggeration.
That movie cost 5 million dollars and grossed 368 million worldwide. But she didn't let its financial success dictate her next steps. She kept alternating Broadway productions with voice work on series such as Rugrats and films such as Anastasia.
Commercial movies were never her absolute priority.
In 2019, the series Evil gave her a role that moved her away from pure comedy. Her portrayal of Sister Andrea brought a dry sobriety to a plot about possession and theological doubt. For this project, the actress dropped the big gestures and worked from silence and a fixed gaze. It's a side she had explored briefly in Wag the Dog in 1997, but here it became the core of the story.
Her Armenian roots have also shaped her career away from the spotlight. In 2014, she published her memoir Andrea Martin’s Lady Parts, in which she details her relationship with identity and the passage of time in an industry obsessed with youth. But she didn't write it from a place of complaint. She wrote it as a survival guide for actors who don't fit the molds of the big studios.
In 2024, she appeared in season four of Only Murders in the Building, playing Charles-Haden Savage's makeup artist. Filming for these episodes took place in New York during the first months of the year. The production kept a strict schedule of ten hours of daily outdoor shooting.
