The Man Who Sculpted His Career with His Eyebrows

Eugene Levy isn't a comic of explosions or theatrical gestures. His strength lies in an almost uncomfortable stillness and in those eyebrows that seem to have a life of their own, ever since he started on Canadian television in the mid-1970s. Before becoming TV's most understanding dad in America, he had to toughen up in the trenches of Toronto's Second City.

In 1976, he joined the cast of Second City Television alongside names who would later become giants, such as John Candy and Catherine O’Hara. There he learned that the most effective humor doesn't come from the direct joke, but from the meticulous construction of pathetic characters who don't know they are.

The risk was absolute.

Levy never needed to be the center of attention to steal scenes. His technique is based on reaction and on his handling of silence. Because in sitcoms, the one who listens is often funnier than the one who talks.

Improvisation as a way of life

For decades Levy was Christopher Guest's secret weapon. In films such as Waiting for Guffman (1996) and Best in Show (2000), he worked without fully scripted scenes, relying only on character outlines and situations. This period defined his ability to hold the frame without blinking while his co-stars went off the rails.

But it wasn't until 1999 that his face reached every corner of the planet thanks to American Pie. He accepted the role of Noah Levenstein on one condition: he wanted to humanize the character so he wouldn't just be a stuffy father. The move paid off, as he ended up appearing in all eight installments of the franchise, including the direct-to-video releases.

And the industry took notice.

Despite the typecasting that usually follows actors after a massive hit, Levy kept a low profile. He turned down generic projects to focus on scripts that let him keep the control over pacing that he cares about so much. So he spent several years working steadily, but without the noise of big headlines.

A Family Renaissance

Many actors of his generation would have retired to play golf after landing a blockbuster franchise. But in 2015, Levy decided to risk his own money to found a production company with his son Dan Levy. The project was called Schitt’s Creek and grew out of a simple premise about a wealthy family that loses everything.

During the show's first seasons, the series went unnoticed by the wider international audience, operating on a modest budget on a Canadian network. But patience paid off in 2020. At that year's Emmy Awards, the series achieved a technical milestone by winning all seven major comedy awards in a single night.

Levy won the Best Actor award at age 73.

It was a late but undeniable validation.

In 2023, he switched gears for Apple TV+ with the documentary series The Reluctant Traveler. In this format, Levy plays up his fear of travel and the unknown as he visits luxury hotels in places like Costa Rica and Finland. The show moves away from fiction to show a man who, at his age, still prefers the comfort of home to adventure.

For the second season, which aired in 2024, the budget increased significantly to cover shoots in seven different European countries. The production wrapped the year with an average of 45 minutes per episode and a crew of more than sixty people on the move.

In March 2024, he received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame with registration number 2,773.
