The Screenwriter Who Carried Golf Clubs

Brian Doyle-Murray was born in 1945 in Illinois and always preferred the shadow of the script to the spotlight. In 1980, he wrote the screenplay for Caddyshack based on his real summers as a caddie at a country club. It was not a studio assignment but a settling of scores with his own adolescence.

He worked on Saturday Night Live between 1979 and 1982. There he polished a dry comedic style that avoided the easy joke. And although many people look at him and see only Bill Murray's older brother, his weight in the industry is measured in writing credits, not magazine covers.

Discretion is his best professional tool.

During the 1980s, he took one supporting role after another in comedies that are now studied today. But his big breakout moment came with Groundhog Day in 1993. In the film, he played Buster Green and had to act as a human bridge between an exhausted director and a lead brother who wouldn't talk to anyone.

Steel-Tough Supporting Roles and Otherworldly Voices

In 1991, he appeared in JFK under Oliver Stone's direction. It was a necessary change of pace that kept casting directors from seeing him only as a sketch actor. Because Brian Doyle-Murray has a knack for making a corrupt politician or an annoying neighbor feel believable with barely a change in expression.

His voice is his biggest financial asset.

Since 1999, he has voiced the Flying Dutchman in the series SpongeBob SquarePants. It's a gig that lets him keep a low profile while his bank account grows thanks to animation residuals. In 2009, he joined the cast of the series The Middle, where he played Mr. Ehlert across 25 episodes spread over several seasons.

He never sought the approval of professional critics.

In 2021, he took part in the animated series Squish, voicing the character Lancenat. His last big-budget live-action appearance was in the series Lodge 49 in 2018. Filming his scenes for SpongeBob SquarePants usually wrapped up in sessions of less than four hours at a recording studio in Los Angeles.
