Catherine O’Hara didn’t chase easy applause when she joined Toronto’s Second City troupe in 1974. She waited tables there before stepping onstage to improvise alongside the likes of Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi. That wild comedy school taught her that humor doesn’t come from being graceful but from the desperation of its characters.
In 1982, she won an Emmy for writing on SCTV, the sketch show in which she parodied Hollywood stars with unusual bite. But Canadian television soon felt too small for her. So she decided to cross the border and try her luck in a market that didn’t yet know how to pigeonhole her.
It was a risky bet.
Tim Burton cast her in 1988 as Delia Deetz in Beetlejuice because he needed someone who could be both ridiculous and sophisticated at the same time. O’Hara accepted the role without realizing that its gothic aesthetic would shape her relationship with audiences for decades. On that shoot, she met her future husband, production designer Bo Welch.
In 1990, the project came along that permanently changed her bank account. Chris Columbus offered her the role of Kate McCallister in Home Alone. The film grossed 476 million dollars worldwide and put her at the center of the commercial industry. But she didn’t want to be just the mother of a child prodigy.
And the industry never forgot her.
During the nineties and early two thousands, she preferred to work with Christopher Guest on low-budget films. In 1996, she shot Waiting for Guffman, and in 2000 she took part in Best in Show. These were films shot without a locked script, where actors improvised from a basic outline. O’Hara proved she could carry an entire scene without a single previously written line.
Many Los Angeles producers couldn’t understand why an actress with her box office potential would prefer these independent projects. But she wanted the creative control that only auteur indie film could give her. In 2006, she reunited with Guest in For Your Consideration, playing an actress desperate to win an award.
Eugene Levy convinced her in 2015 to star in a small series about a wealthy family that loses everything. In Schitt’s Creek, she created Moira Rose, a character who spoke in an indefinable accent and wore wigs as if they were armor. The show took years to catch on, but when it did, the impact was massive.
Money was not the main driving force.
In 2020, she took home the Emmy for Best Actress in a Comedy after a final season that swept the major categories. It was the first time in history that a comedy series won all seven major awards in a single year. O’Hara went from cult actress to a central figure in global pop culture at over 60 years old.
In 2024, she reprised her role as Delia Deetz in the sequel to Beetlejuice, directed by Burton. That same year, she appeared in the action film Argylle, directed by Matthew Vaughn. Her schedule filled up with large-scale projects without losing touch with productions that demand more complex performance work.
In 2025, she joined the filming of season two of The Last of Us for HBO Max under a contract that included strict confidentiality clauses about her character.
