Synopsis of Designated Survivor

Tom Kirkman is an academic who serves as the United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. One night, during the State of the Union address, an explosion destroys the Capitol and kills the president and everyone ahead of him in the line of succession, except for him. Kirkman, named the designated survivor, is sworn in as president with no experience in the office. As he tries to steady a shaken nation, he searches for the truth behind the attack, which could be only the beginning of something bigger. The series, created by David Guggenheim, airs on ABC and stars Kiefer Sutherland as Tom Kirkman.

Trivia about Designated Survivor

The first episode premiered on September 21, 2016 to an audience of more than 10 million viewers.

ABC canceled the series on May 11, 2018 after two seasons, citing heavy showrunner turnover and declining ratings.

In July 2019, Netflix announced it would not renew the series for a fourth season, considering the third season a satisfying conclusion.

Kiefer Sutherland had no plans to return to television, but changed his mind after reading the series' first script.

It received the Critics' Choice Television Award for Most Exciting New Series in 2016, the year it premiered.

The second season lowered the average audience from 12.1 million viewers to 8.6 million, a drop that contributed to ABC's cancellation of the series.

Production of the third season moved from Toronto to Los Angeles due to a Kiefer Sutherland contract clause, which raised costs and complicated continuity at ABC.
