Adan Canto didn't go after acting at first. In 2009 he lived in Mexico City, and his only real plan was writing songs for other people. He was 28 years old. But theater crossed his path by pure inertia, and he ended up starring in the series Estado de Gracia in 2010. That shoot forced him to choose between the guitar and screenwriting.
He chose the script.
He arrived in the United States with no safety net. In 2013, he landed the role of Paul Torres in The Following, a thriller that put him face to face with Kevin Bacon. It was his first taste of the pace of the American industry. There was no time for slow transitions.
And the gamble paid off.
Big-budget movies soon followed. In 2014, he played Sunspot in X-Men: Days of Future Past. The shoot cost 200 million dollars, and his character needed hardly any dialogue to carry dramatic weight. The production was chaos of special effects, but it taught him how the major superhero franchises worked.
Television was his most fertile ground. Between 2016 and 2019, he played Aaron Shore in Designated Survivor. His character started out as a political advisor and ended up as vice president in the show. That role gave him massive global visibility.
But Canto wanted more control over the story.
In 2014, he founded his own production company and directed the short film Before Tomorrow. He was as interested in technique and editing as he was in acting. He repeated the experience in 2020 with The Shot, a drama set in Texas during the Great Depression.
That piece won several awards at specialized film festivals. Its visual style was stark and direct, far from the usual tricks of actors who step behind the camera. He understood that the camera was not there to serve him, but the story.
In 2022, he took on the role of Arman Morales in The Cleaning Lady. The series was a ratings hit for Fox. He shot two full seasons before his health forced him to stop abruptly. It was his last major work in front of the cameras before the physical demands became unsustainable.
Adan Canto died on January 8, 2024. He was 42 years old and had appendix cancer that he kept out of the public eye. His last on-screen appearance was in the final episode of the second season of his flagship series.
Production on the third season began just days after his passing.
