Paulo Costanzo was born in Brampton, Ontario, in 1978. He became a familiar face to mainstream audiences in 2000, thanks to Road Trip, a raunchy comedy that grossed almost $120 million worldwide. In the film he played a Jewish student afraid of flying, and its success opened the doors of the major Los Angeles studios to him right away.
But the industry tends to typecast comedic actors quickly.
His breakthrough into mainstream television came in 2004 with the premiere of Joey. He played Michael Tribbiani, the gifted nephew of Matt LeBlanc. It was a difficult role because the shadow of Friends loomed large over any young actor. The series ran for two seasons and ended in 2006 with a cancellation that left Costanzo searching for his place outside traditional sitcoms.
In 2009, he signed on to play Evan R. Lawson in Royal Pains. What seemed like a light medical drama became an eight-season steady job. Costanzo brought much-needed comic relief to the luxury medicine storylines in the Hamptons. He earned a per-episode salary that placed him among the best-paid supporting actors on American basic cable.
And the gamble paid off.
During those years, the actor also tried his hand behind the camera. He directed an episode of the series in 2015 to better understand how a major USA Network production works internally. That technical experience changed the way he read scripts and led him to choose projects with more complex narrative structures.
His time on The Expanse in 2015 was brief but striking for science fiction fans. He played Shed Garvey, a character who suffered one of the most unexpected deaths in the first season. That plot twist shocked audiences and showed that Costanzo could fit into much darker, more dramatic tones.
In 2017, he joined the cast of Designated Survivor to bring Lyor Boone to life. His character was an eccentric political consultant who clashed with the idealism of the president played by Kiefer Sutherland. The series moved to Netflix for its third season in 2019 before ending its production run for good.
It wasn't all smooth sailing.
After the political series ended, he spent some time away from the spotlight. In 2022, he returned to the screen with Upload, Amazon Prime Video's satire about life after death in digital form. There he played Matteo, a revolutionary leader who added a layer of social criticism to a plot that mixed romance and technology.
In 2024, he appeared in the second season of The Big Door Prize for Apple TV+. His work focused on a storyline of supporting characters exploring the impact of a mysterious machine on a small town. Filming of his scenes for this production wrapped in Toronto with a crew of more than two hundred people coordinated by the production company Skydance Television.
