Peter Jacobson was born in Chicago in 1965 and trained at Juilliard to learn that acting isn't about shouting. His face has been a constant presence on American television since the mid-1990s. But his first big break came with a small role in Mejor imposible (1997), where he shared the screen with Jack Nicholson.
He is the supporting player who saves any mediocre scene.
In 2007, he landed the role of Dr. Chris Taub on the series House. He entered as one of several candidates in a fictional selection process within the storyline and stayed until the end of the production in 2012. His character provided a moral counterpoint needed against the protagonist's tyranny.
And he did it without making a fuss. Jacobson shows a restraint that few actors of his generation manage to sustain across so many seasons. At heart, his theater training taught him that the script is sacred and that small gestures say more than grand displays.
But Jacobson didn't get stuck in medical drama. In 2013, he joined the cast of Ray Donovan to play Lee Drexler, an unscrupulous lawyer who fit perfectly into the Los Angeles underworld. The role let him step away from the white coat and explore a much more cynical, electric side.
Television has given him his greatest moments of financial success and recognition.
For three seasons, he starred in Colony (2016) as Alan Snyder. In this science fiction series, he played a collaborator who must manage an alien occupation while trying to save his own skin. It was a performance full of gray shades that avoided becoming a cartoonish villain.
As a result, his name became synonymous with reliability for casting directors at the major networks. In 2018, he took part in the acclaimed The Americans, playing Agent Wolfe. His ability to blend into the Cold War setting showed that his classical training in New York remained his best professional tool.
Before turning sixty, he entered the world of the living dead. In 2019, he joined Fear the Walking Dead as Rabbi Jacob Kessner. The role demanded a spiritual and physical toll unlike his earlier work in offices or law firms.
Not all of his career has been massive hits.
Jacobson has been through dozens of pilots that never aired and series canceled after a single batch of episodes. His professional resilience is the most notable fact of his career in an industry that often sidelines character actors once they reach a certain age.
In 2024, he appeared in the horror film Smile 2 under director Parker Finn. In the movie, he plays Morris, a character who provides crucial technical information for the suspense plot. The film was shot mainly on location in New Jersey and New York with an estimated budget of $28 million.
