Margaret Denise Quigley landed in Tokyo at just eighteen years old with very little money in her pockets. She had no plans to become an actress and was not looking for international fame. Her goal was to save up for college in Hawaii, but the Japanese fashion market turned her down because of her racially ambiguous look.
And then came Hong Kong.
In that city, she caught the attention of Jackie Chan. The veteran actor was looking for fresh faces for his stunt team and saw in her a discipline other models didn't have. Maggie didn't know martial arts, but she learned through hard knocks and extreme choreography that ended up defining her physical style on screen.
In 2000, she made her debut in Gen-Y Cops, and her name began to turn up in the offices of American producers. This young woman didn't need stunt doubles for most of her high-risk scenes. Jackie Chan mentored her during her first years in the Asian film industry, before Hollywood came knocking.
It was not a bed of roses.
In 2006, she landed the role of Zhen Lei in Mission: Impossible III after a casting process that valued her ability to hold her own opposite Tom Cruise. The shoot required her to learn to drive high-end vehicles at dangerous speeds on the streets of Italy. In 2007, she worked alongside Bruce Willis in Live Free or Die Hard, playing a tech-savvy villain who broke the mold for female supporting characters in action cinema of the era.
The premiere of Nikita in 2010 marked a real shift in the hierarchy of American television. It was the first time a woman of Asian descent starred in a primetime action series on a major U.S. network. The show ran for four seasons and completed a total of seventy-three episodes before its final cancellation in 2013.
But television wasn't her only battlefield during those years of intense work. Between 2014 and 2016, she appeared in the Divergent franchise, playing Tori Wu across three consecutive films. That young adult sci-fi saga helped her maintain a presence in theaters while she filmed the series Stalker for CBS.
The industry isn't always kind.
In 2016, she joined the cast of Designated Survivor as FBI agent Hannah Wells. Her character became the driving force behind the show's conspiracy-driven investigation over three full seasons. To keep production costs down during its final stretch, the shoot moved from Toronto to several locations across the United States.
In 2021, she starred in The Protégé under director Martin Campbell. She shared the screen with Michael Keaton and Samuel L. Jackson in a story about hired assassins that required three months of physical training before cameras started rolling in Bucharest. Maggie Q performed her own fight scenes despite having undergone major spinal surgery just two months before production began.
In 2023, she appeared in the thriller Fear the Night, playing a war veteran who must protect her family during a bachelorette party. That same year, she joined the cast of the action comedy The Family Plan, distributed worldwide by a digital streaming platform. The production of this latter film had an estimated budget of eighty million dollars, not including international promotion costs.
