Shailene Woodley started working before she had any sense of cinema. By age five she was already in front of advertising cameras, and soon after she landed on television with small roles in series such as The District and Crossing Jordan. She wasn't looking for fame, but fame found her.
In 2008, she starred in The Secret Life of the American Teenager.
That ABC Family series ran for five seasons and gave her the training she needed to understand how a large-scale film set works. It was a stage of technical learning in which Woodley refined the natural style that would later become her trademark. But the real turning point came when she decided that TV scripts were no longer enough.
Alexander Payne cast her in 2011 to play the daughter of George Clooney in The Descendants. That role earned her a Golden Globe nomination and changed how studios saw her (she was no longer just a teen TV face). Critics praised her ability to carry the drama without falling into the excesses common among actors of her generation.
And then the franchises came along.
The industry tried to pigeonhole her as the next big star of teen literary adaptations. In 2014, she released The Fault in Our Stars and Divergent just a few months apart. The first one grossed over 300 million dollars worldwide on a minimal budget and confirmed that Woodley could draw audiences to theaters on her own.
But the dystopian genre quickly began to wear thin. The Divergent franchise suffered creative and financial fatigue that ended with the cancellation of its final installment in theaters. Woodley then decided to step away from the major studios in search of projects with greater dramatic weight and fewer promotional demands.
In 2017, she joined the cast of Big Little Lies on HBO.
Sharing the screen with Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon pushed her to raise her standards. Her performance as Jane Chapman earned her critics' respect and showed that her acting maturity didn't depend on special effects. That production won eight Emmy Awards in its first season and redefined her career far from blockbusters.
Woodley began getting involved in producing her own projects so she could have control over the stories. In 2018, she produced and starred in Adrift, a physically grueling shoot on the open ocean. She prefers realism to digital effects whenever the script allows it and the budget can support it.
In 2021, she appeared in The Mauritanian alongside Jodie Foster and Benedict Cumberbatch. It was a supporting but pivotal role in a political plot that aimed to expose injustices in the U.S. justice system. She took the project because it allowed her to work on stories with a real social backdrop.
In 2023, she played Lina Lardi in the film Ferrari by Michael Mann.
For this role, she had to work on her accent and study the biography of a woman who lived in the shadow of the automotive legend. It was a precise, technical shoot in which Mann demanded absolute restraint. The film had a budget of $95 million and premiered at the Venice Film Festival to mixed reviews from the international press.
In 2024, Three Women premiered on television after a long post-production process and distribution changes. The series is based on the book by Lisa Taddeo and explores female desire through three intersecting stories. Starz picked it up after Showtime decided not to air it due to budget adjustments to its programming schedule.
Filming for this series took place mainly on location in New York during 2022.
