In Maryland, Edward Snowden works in IT for a company that collaborates with United States intelligence agencies. He is a highly skilled professional, and his day-to-day work involves managing systems that he himself begins to view with suspicion. Meanwhile, he is in a relationship with Lindsay Mills, who keeps him company in a seemingly calm life. His job exposes him to surveillance programs that reach citizens around the world, and Snowden begins to wonder how far the government goes and what is done with all that information. He wants to understand what lies behind the tools he uses every day. His doubts clash with the loyalty he feels toward his country and the atmosphere of secrecy he moves in, and that tension between duty and conscience is the starting point of the story.

Trivia about Snowden

Peter Gabriel wrote the song "The Veil" exclusively for the film. Its music video mixes photographs and an appearance by Snowden with scenes from the movie.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt pledged to donate his entire salary from the film, with the aim of "facilitating the conversation" about the relationship between technology and democracy.
In its opening weekend in the United States, the film grossed 8 million dollars and placed fourth at the box office. It was Oliver Stone's worst opening of his career, in more than 2,000 theaters.
Stone was unable to attend his mother's funeral, as she died in the United States while the film was shooting in Germany, because the budget was too tight.
