Eric Kofi Abrefa is not an actor of empty gestures. His on-screen presence is often measured by the tension he builds before delivering his first line of dialogue and by an economy of movement that reveals his classical training.
It's a matter of specific weight.
He trained at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London. There he learned that silence communicates more than a shout, and by 2006 he was already performing on professional stages with a discipline that caught the attention of the National Theatre.
He took part in demanding stage productions such as The Amen Corner and Wild Swans. The move to screen acting was not immediate, however, as he preferred to refine his craft on stage before pursuing the camera with single-minded focus.
In 2015, he appeared in the series Humans. That science fiction project allowed him to explore a restrained dramatic style that he would later apply in bigger-budget productions with greater international reach.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2017, his face became familiar to the general public thanks to Harlots. J.A. Bayona cast him in 2018 for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Although his role was brief, the experience on a blockbuster of that scale gave him the seasoning he needed to take on grittier projects.
In 2019, he joined the cast of Blue Story. The film dissected gang violence in London with a raw technical honesty that unsettled some sectors of the British press for its lack of filters.
He took on the challenge of playing characters who live on the edges of the law without falling into the caricature of the street thug.
His international breakthrough came in 2021 with the premiere of BMF. In this series, he plays Lamar Silas, a volatile and terrifying character who moves away from any flat antagonist mold to embrace an almost hypnotic psychopathy.
His performance relies on a fixed stare and electric movements that keep viewers on edge during the action sequences.
And the recognition did not slow him down.
In 2023, he shot The Kitchen under the direction of Daniel Kaluuya and Kibwe Tavares. The film was released worldwide in January 2024 and offered a dystopian vision of a segregated London, with the actor bringing the gravitas the main storyline needed.
His contract for the first three seasons of BMF included an exclusivity clause that limited his work on other shoots during the 2021-2022 biennium.
