Andrew Scott was born in Dublin in 1976, and by age eight he was already filming cereal commercials for Irish television. He wasn't the typical child actor eager for fame, but he had an unusual ability to hold adults' gaze without blinking. He briefly studied at Trinity College Dublin, though he dropped out after a few weeks to join the Abbey Theatre in his hometown as an apprentice.
It was there that he understood silence communicates more than a scream.
In 2010, he appeared on BBC screens as Jim Moriarty, and the impact was immediate. Instead of the deep, menacing tone of classic criminals, he used a high, brittle voice that was far more dangerous. He won the BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actor in 2012 for that role, and suddenly the industry began sending him scripts to play dark men.
But Scott turned down almost all offers from major studios because he feared being trapped in the role of the elegant psychopath.
He chose to take refuge in London theater to keep his face from being worn out by commercial products. In 2017, he played Hamlet at the Almeida Theatre under the direction of Robert Icke, and critics praised his emotional fragility. That production ran for nearly four hours, and Scott kept audiences from taking their eyes off him for a second.
In 2019, his career took a different turn when Phoebe Waller-Bridge asked him to play the priest in the second season of Fleabag. The character had no name in the script, but audiences quickly dubbed him the 'Sexy Priest.' It became a cultural phenomenon that Scott handled with a mix of shyness and professional distance.
And the gamble paid off.
That success allowed him to choose projects with a freedom few European actors ever achieve. In 2023, he starred in All of Us Strangers alongside Paul Mescal, and the film became an introspective exploration of grief and loneliness. The chemistry between the two actors was the core of a story that avoided easy sentimentality and focused on raw pain.
In 2024, the Netflix series Ripley arrived, shot entirely in black and white. Scott took on the role of Tom Ripley with an almost reptilian coolness, and filming stretched across several European countries with a minimalist aesthetic. The series was costly to produce due to the technical complexity of its cinematography and the use of real locations in Italy.
Filming on the Amalfi Coast lasted more than six months.
