Synopsis of RIPLEY

In New York in 1961, Tom Ripley is a small-time con artist living in a rundown hotel. A wealthy man hires him for a seemingly simple job: convince his son, Dickie Greenleaf, to leave Italy and come home. Tom travels to the European country and discovers the comfortable, unhurried life Dickie leads there, a world of luxury and leisure very different from his own. Created and directed by Steven Zaillian, the series follows Ripley into unfamiliar territory, where his mission begins to get complicated and he must decide how far he is willing to go to keep what he has found. Andrew Scott plays Tom, Johnny Flynn plays Dickie and Dakota Fanning plays Marge Sherwood. It streams on Netflix.

Trivia about RIPLEY

Zaillian drew inspiration from the black-and-white cover of a edition of the novel that he kept on his desk while writing the scripts.

The series was supposed to air on Showtime, but the switch to Netflix took place in February 2023, when production was already well underway.

RIPLEY debuted at No. 10 on Netflix's English TV Shows chart, with 16.9 million hours viewed in the week of April 1–7, 2024.

At the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, it received 14 nominations and won four, including Steven Zaillian's win for Outstanding Directing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.

John Malkovich, who had already played Ripley in the film Ripley's Game (2002), was cast as Reeves Minot, a character from Highsmith's later novels.

Steven Zaillian argued that adapting the novel as a series rather than a feature film allowed him to be more faithful to the story, the tone and the subtleties of Highsmith.

Filming in Italy stretched on for months and took place during the COVID-19 pandemic. Eliot Sumner lived in Rome's Trastevere neighborhood and spoke Italian on set.

Andrew Scott confirmed in March 2026 that the second season of RIPLEY will not move forward, even though the series adapts only the first Patricia Highsmith novel about the character.
