Lindsay Duncan was born in Edinburgh in 1950. She didn't come from a family of performers, but she ended up studying at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London. She worked in regional theaters before the Royal Shakespeare Company noticed her.
In 1985, she played the Marquise de Merteuil in Les Liaisons Dangereuses. It was the role that put her on the international map. The play moved from Stratford to London and then to Broadway. She earned a Tony nomination and an Olivier Award.
British television has always been her safe haven.
In 2005, she accepted the role of Servilia of the Cepionii in the series Rome. It was an extremely expensive HBO and BBC production that ran for two seasons. Her character was an aristocrat who pulled the strings of the Senate from the shadows. Duncan brought a sharp coldness that the producers desperately wanted.
Many people first discovered her in Black Mirror. In the series' first episode, which aired in 2011, she played the adviser to the British prime minister. She had to manage a real kidnapping crisis with a calm that felt almost violent to the viewer.
And the gamble paid off.
She prefers scripts where silence says more than a scream. In 2013, she starred in Le Week-End alongside Jim Broadbent. They played a couple trying to save their marriage in Paris. The film cost just under five million euros to make and earned double that within a few months.
She doesn't enjoy long shoots in Hollywood. She turned down big projects because she preferred to stay in London raising her son. But in 2014, she agreed to appear in Birdman by Alejandro González Iñárritu. She played a bitter theater critic who threatened to derail the lead character's career.
She filmed her scenes in just a few days in New York.
She accepted the role because the script let her deliver uncomfortable truths about actors' egos. Her confrontation with Michael Keaton in the theater bar was filmed in long, uncut takes. For many industry critics, that sequence is the film's central pillar.
Between 2018 and 2022, she played Ysabeau de Clermont in the series A Discovery of Witches. She was a centuries-old vampire with impeccable wardrobe. The show was filmed mainly in Wales and Venice on a strict schedule.
In 2024, she appeared in the series The New Look, playing Coco Chanel in her later years. The series explores the Nazi occupation of Paris and the rivalry with Christian Dior. Duncan filmed most of her scenes on closed sets in Paris to capture the claustrophobia of the era.
That same year, she premiered Truelove on Channel 4. It is a drama about euthanasia and suicide pacts among elderly friends. Filming took place in Bristol and lasted exactly six weeks of intense production.
