Gemma Chan turned down a contract at one of London's most prestigious law firms after graduating in Law at Oxford. Her parents didn't understand why she preferred to spend her savings on an acting course at the Drama Centre London. That decision in 2008 defined the rest of her professional life.
The legal profession lost a professional, and the movie industry gained an unconventional actress.
Her first steps were low-key but steady. She worked on shows such as Doctor Who and Sherlock, where she had only a handful of lines. But it was in 2015 that the series Humans gave her the room she needed to stand out.
Playing a humanoid required absolute physical control that few actors can maintain over months of filming. Her legal training also helped her dissect scripts with a cool, technical precision that proved very useful on set.
And the gamble paid off.
The release of Crazy Rich Asians in 2018 changed her standing in the American film industry. Her role as Astrid Leong-Teo brought a restrained elegance that connected with audiences instantly. Hollywood took notice of her on-screen presence.
Her entry into the Marvel universe came soon after. In 2019, she played Minn-Erva in Captain Marvel, though under layers of blue makeup that made her almost unrecognizable. The irony is that the studio decided to hire her again for a different leading role shortly afterward.
In 2021, she led the cast of Eternals as Sersi. It was the first time an actor returned to the franchise playing two different, major characters. The production cost 200 million dollars and required shoots on natural locations in Fuerteventura.
Numbers rule the major studios.
Chan decided that acting wasn't enough and founded her own production company to develop stories the system often ignored. In 2022, she took part in Don’t Worry Darling, a film surrounded by media noise that did not affect her professional performance. Her approach has always been that of a technician who knows the rules of the game well.
In 2023, she joined the cast of The Creator, a science fiction bet directed by Gareth Edwards. The film was shot on a tight budget of 80 million dollars, aiming for a visual realism rare in the genre. Her career moved away from the conventions of the traditional star.
The actress has a packed schedule with projects including literary adaptations and biopics of forgotten Asian figures. Her contract with international cosmetics brands funds much of her independent projects.
Filming for her production about Anna May Wong is scheduled to begin in London around mid-2025.
