David John McDonald sat in front of a form from the British actors' union and realized his name was already taken by another professional. It was 1987. He chose Tennant after the singer of Pet Shop Boys, and that administrative decision changed the course of British television forever.
He grew up in Bathgate (Scotland), under the watchful eye of his father, a minister of the Church of Scotland. By age three he was already saying he wanted to be an actor, obsessed with the science fiction stories he watched on Saturday afternoons. He studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama while his classmates doubted he could shed his thick regional accent.
It was not a quick road.
He spent much of the 1990s working with the Royal Shakespeare Company. There he played jesters and kings with a physical intensity that would become his trademark. In 1996, he appeared in the film Jude, but movies seemed reluctant to give him a place of his own while the theater consumed him entirely.
In 2005, screenwriter Russell T Davies cast him as the lead in the miniseries Casanova. It was the perfect dress rehearsal. A few weeks after it aired, it was announced that Tennant would be the Tenth Doctor in Doctor Who. The actor was fulfilling his childhood dream of piloting the TARDIS, and audiences responded with numbers that came close to 13 million viewers for the special episodes.
His time on the series ended in 2010 after filming episodes in Dubai and Wales. But his fear of being typecast didn't last long. In 2013, he starred in Broadchurch, playing Detective Alec Hardy. The series gripped the United Kingdom and proved that his talent for dark drama was just as powerful as his electric energy in science fiction.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2015 he entered the superhero universe with Marvel's Jessica Jones. He played Kilgrave, a villain who can control minds, and critics praised his ability to be terrifying without raising his voice. It was rare for a British actor of his stature to make such a sharp impact in the American streaming industry.
In 2019, he premiered Good Omens alongside Michael Sheen. The chemistry between them was so obvious that the production went beyond Neil Gaiman's original material. They filmed a second season in 2023 that explored the relationship between an angel and a demon with a classic comedic tone that few actors know how to handle without slipping into parody.
But the theater kept calling for his time every few years. In 2024, he returned to the London stage with a version of Macbeth that sold out within minutes. The production used headphones so audiences could hear the actors' whispers directly in their ears.
The stage is his true refuge.
Away from the spotlight, he keeps a private family life with his wife Georgia Tennant and their five children. In 2023, he briefly returned to Doctor Who for three special episodes marking the franchise's sixtieth anniversary. He received the standard BBC fee, and the earnings of his production company (Sandwich Productions) reported assets worth 1.7 million pounds in the fiscal year of that period.
