Cherie Lunghi arrived on the set of Excalibur in 1981 with classical training that outweighed her own résumé. John Boorman wanted a Guinevere who wasn't just a pretty face in a cardboard forest. She brought a technical coolness learned at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.
That shoot in Ireland was a chaos of heavy armor and mud.
But the film did well at the box office. Lunghi wasn't looking to become a typical Hollywood star and preferred to return to the London stage. Theater gave her the control the camera sometimes took away.
In 1986, she worked on The Mission under the direction of Roland Joffé. It was a brief role, but her screen presence rivaled Jeremy Irons'. That production won the Palme d'Or at Cannes and put her name on the radar of international casting directors.
In 1989, she took on a role that would have been unthinkable for a woman of that era in Spain. She played Gabriella Benson in The Manageress. She was the head of a men's football team in a drama that challenged the sexism of British football stands.
The series ran for two seasons and ended in 1990.
It was a ratings hit on Channel 4. More than six million viewers followed its tactical debates every week. That's how Lunghi definitively shed the period-drama lady label the British industry kept trying to pin on her.
And the gamble paid off.
Before the end of the 1990s, she appeared in Frankenstein de Mary Shelley in 1994. She worked with Kenneth Branagh on a grandiose version of the myth. But commercial cinema started offering her supporting roles that didn't always match her craft.
In 2008, she decided to compete on Strictly Come Dancing. Many critics thought it would damage her reputation as a Royal Shakespeare Company actress. They were wrong. Lunghi showed a physical discipline that helped her endure nine weeks of competition at age 56.
In 2013, she joined the cast of Casualty to play Margaret Binns.
Because British television has always been her most profitable haven.
Her most steady work over the last decade has focused on narrating documentaries and audiobooks. In 2022, she voiced various BBC projects, drawing on a diction that remains a reference at London's acting schools.
Her television contract for the series Archie in 2023 included a shooting schedule of just four intensive days.
