Katherine Parkinson had no intention of becoming the face of British comedy while studying Classics at Oxford. Her plans revolved around ancient texts and academia. But university theater crossed her path, and she ended up leaving her degree to enroll at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.
There she met Chris O'Dowd. That chance connection in acting classes later helped her land the project that defined her public image with mainstream audiences.
In 2006, she accepted the role of Jen Barber in The IT Crowd.
It was her first big stroke of luck.
Her character was the essential link between two socially awkward IT specialists and the real world. Parkinson played Jen with a mix of desperation and an unmatched technical superiority that earned her the BAFTA for Best Actress in a Comedy in 2014. Across the series' four seasons and its farewell special, the actress showed that physical comedy and elegance were not at odds.
Fear of being typecast led her to seek roles where laughter wasn't the main driver. In 2014, she appeared in The Honourable Woman alongside Maggie Gyllenhaal. It was a brief role, but it helped casting directors see another side of her range, far from London office comedies.
A year later came Humans. In this science fiction production, she played Laura Hawkins, a lawyer who must deal with an android in her own home. The series drew audiences of six million viewers at its premiere on Channel 4.
Parkinson carried the emotional weight of the storyline across three seasons. She knew the show's secret wasn't the robots but the breakdown of the human family surrounding them.
And the gamble paid off.
Theater has always been her refuge when television became too monotonous. In 2018, she starred in Home, I'm Darling at the National Theatre. Her performance as a woman obsessed with 1950s domestic style earned her a nomination for the Olivier Award.
In 2019, she made her playwriting debut with the play Sitting. The piece grew out of her own experience as an artist's model before she was famous, and it premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival before moving to London stages. It was a risky move that took her well outside her comfort zone as an actress.
In 2024, she joined the cast of Rivals, the television adaptation of Jilly Cooper's novel. In this project, she plays Lizzie Vereker in a world of excess and media rivalries set in the 1980s. Filming required massive trips to locations in Gloucestershire over several months of intense work.
She also voiced one of the characters in the animated film That Christmas, produced in 2024. Her career now moves between big-budget productions and the most demanding theater circuit in the UK. Her salary per episode on top-tier British productions is around 50,000 British pounds.
