Synopsis of The IT Crowd

Roy Trenneman and Maurice Moss make up the IT department at Reynholm Industries, a fictional company based in London. They work in a messy, dirty basement, far from the modern offices and city views enjoyed by the rest of the staff. Socially awkward and considered geeks by their colleagues, the two technicians look down on a company that depends on their expertise while nobody pays them any attention. Roy handles problems with tech support clichés and avoids the phone whenever he can. The routine changes when Jen Barber, the department's new manager, arrives. She knows nothing about computers. Created and written by Graham Linehan, the series airs on the British channel Channel 4.

Trivia about The IT Crowd

Graham Linehan wrote the series after a house visit from a PC technician with poor social skills.

The first season was filmed at Teddington Studios, and later seasons at Pinewood Studios, with exterior shots in Thomas More Square and Amhurst Road.

The DVD's startup sequence and menus are designed to look like a ZX Spectrum.

NBC came close to airing an American version in 2007–08, with Richard Ayoade reprising his role as Moss and Joel McHale as Roy.

The German version was canceled after just two episodes due to low ratings.

The premiere on Channel 4 drew 1.8 million viewers, a figure BBC News described as "disappointing."

The episode "The Speech" from the third season was removed from Channel 4's streaming service on October 4, 2020, over perceived transphobic content.

The fifth season was commissioned by Channel 4 to premiere in 2011, but it was shelved because the writing team could not meet regularly and the creator had other commitments.
