The Man Who Gave the Dark Side Its Voice

At almost six feet tall, Peter Serafinowicz has a voice like velvet recorded in a basement. He was born in Liverpool in 1972. His first big impact on popular culture happened without anyone seeing his face.

In 1999, George Lucas cast him to voice Darth Maul in Star Wars: Episode I. The physical actor was Ray Park, but the real menace came from Serafinowicz's vocal cords. He was paid a pittance compared to the film's budget, and he wasn't even invited to the official premiere in London.

That early disappointment set the pace for his later career. He always kept one foot in big-budget productions and the other in the strangest corners of British television comedy.

But his anonymity didn't last long.

In 2002, he co-created the series Look Around You with Robert Popper. It was a meticulous parody of 1970s educational documentaries. The level of detail was so obsessive that many viewers took months to realize the scientific experiments were complete inventions.

The Elegance of the Weapons Sommelier

In 2004 he played Pete in Zombies Party. He was the insufferable flatmate who ends up as a zombie inside a shower. That collaboration with Edgar Wright gave him access to the circle of English cult comedy.

And the gamble paid off.

He appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014 as a Nova Corps officer. However, his most striking visual moment came in 2017 with John Wick: Chapter 2. He played the weapons sommelier at the Continental Hotel in Rome.

He handed out assault rifles and tactical knives with the calm of someone recommending a 1982 Bordeaux. That three-minute scene became a style benchmark for modern action cinema thanks to its lack of histrionics.

Because Serafinowicz knows that less is always more.

The Blue Suit and the Office Raid

In 2016, he accepted the lead role in Amazon's version of The Tick. He had to spend hours each day inside a blue latex suit that weighed several kilos. The series was canceled after two seasons, but his portrayal of the optimistic and somewhat goofy superhero earned unanimous praise from specialized critics.

In 2024 he took part in The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, directed by Guy Ritchie. His ability to switch between war films and video game voice work, such as Dark Souls II, keeps him a go-to actor for casting directors.

He doesn't seek the spotlight or fashion magazine covers. He prefers the reliability of the character actor who is always present in high-end productions.

In 2024, his daily fee for international productions topped 50,000 euros. The union contract for actors at his level in the UK sets minimums that he routinely triples thanks to his image rights in advertising. He currently lives in the West Hampstead neighborhood of London.
