Simon Pegg was born in Brockworth in 1970 and grew up surrounded by comic books and B-movies. He studied theater at the University of Bristol, where he wrote a thesis on psychoanalysis and comedy that would lay the foundations for his narrative style.
Before breaking into movies, he spent years working the British stand-up comedy circuit. His routines weren't about politics but about his obsession with Star Wars and the pop culture of the eighties. His luck changed when he met Edgar Wright and Nick Frost in the nineties.
In 1999, he premiered the series Spaced alongside Jessica Hynes. Wright's direction brought a frantic visual style that had never been seen before in a low-budget sitcom. The show lasted just two seasons but built a devoted fan base in the United Kingdom.
That was the start of an unbreakable creative partnership.
His leap to the big screen came in 2004 with Shaun of the Dead. Pegg wrote the script as a tribute to the films of George A. Romero. But underneath it was a story about male friendship stuck in arrested development and a lack of ambition.
The film grossed $30 million worldwide on a minimal investment. Hollywood started paying attention to that skinny guy running away from the living dead with a cricket bat.
In 2007 he released Hot Fuzz, and in 2013 he closed the trilogy with The World's End. The three projects share a common element: the Cornetto ice cream as a symbol of relief after violence. Pegg has always preferred to write his own characters to keep control of the tone of the joke.
He wasn't chasing easy fame.
In 2011, he co-wrote and starred in Paul. It was a love letter to science fiction in which a pot-smoking alien crossed the United States in an RV. The script grew out of an idea that Pegg and Frost had during a rainy shoot in London years earlier.
J.J. Abrams recruited him in 2006 for the third installment of Mission: Impossible. Pegg came on as a tech specialist who brought comic relief to the tensions surrounding Tom Cruise. But the character of Benji Dunn grew into an essential field agent in the story over the following decades.
In 2009, he took on the role of Montgomery Scott in the reboot of Star Trek. Replacing James Doohan was a huge challenge for any fan of the franchise. Pegg brought a nervous, technical edge that fit the franchise's new timeline.
And audiences accepted it without complaint.
In 2016, he took things a step further and wrote the screenplay for Star Trek Beyond. He had to balance the demands of a major studio with the philosophical essence of the original 1960s series. It was a fast writing process that lasted less than six months to meet production deadlines.
In 2024, he lent his voice to the animated series Tales of the Empire, playing a character from the Star Wars universe. It's a full-circle moment for someone who started out parodying that same galaxy in his youth with cheap costumes.
Filming Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two in 2025 was a logistical challenge because of the extreme weather conditions in the Arctic. Production costs for that installment exceeded $290 million due to technical delays.
