David Edward Williams had to change his surname because another David Williams was already registered with the actors' union. He chose Walliams.
It was an administrative decision that preceded one of the most profitable runs in British comedy at the turn of the century. He started at the National Youth Theatre, where he met Matt Lucas. That professional connection drove Little Britain. The show premiered on radio in 2000 before jumping to television in 2003, where it became a massive ratings phenomenon.
But the sketch comedy of the era aged quickly. What was hilarious to millions of viewers in 2005 was later criticized for its broad strokes. Walliams read the shift in the climate well and diversified his income before the format ran its course.
Because Walliams is not just a television face but also an aggressive manager of his own brand.
In 2008, he published The Boy in the Dress. Many critics thought it was a celebrity whim, an attempt to try his luck in bookstores. They were wrong. Walliams spotted a gap in the market that Roald Dahl had left empty and filled it with frenzied productivity.
And the gamble paid off.
His books have sold more than 50 million copies worldwide by 2022. He didn't stop at writing, either: he also produced television adaptations of his works, such as Gangsta Granny in 2013 and Mr Stink in 2012. This allowed him to control the entire value chain of his creative output.
His public image shifted from satirical comedian to go-to author for British families. In 2017, he received the Order of the British Empire for his services to charity and the arts. That cemented his status as a national treasure in the eyes of the publishing industry.
In 2012 he joined Britain’s Got Talent as a judge. His role was to be the eccentric counterpoint to Simon Cowell's coolness. He won the award for Best TV Judge at the National Television Awards multiple times and held the position for a decade.
But everything went wrong because of a leak.
In 2022, derogatory comments recorded during a break in filming in 2020 came to light. Walliams immediately apologized for his remarks toward the contestants. Media pressure and a shift in public sensitivity forced him to leave the show that same year. Bruno Tonioli took his place for the 2023 season.
He signed a multimillion-dollar deal with HarperCollins in 2024 to keep publishing titles through the end of the decade. In 2025, his schedule included development of the film The Chime. The film industry still sees him as a safe bet for family audiences, despite the reputational setbacks he suffered in the past.
His estimated net worth of 2024 exceeded 20 million pounds sterling.
